The history of 122 Arlington

Dorothy Hewitt founded The Boston Center for Adult Education (BCAE) in 1933. Whether serving as a site for volunteer wartime efforts in the 1940s, a haven for social policy debate in the 1960s, or a resource for personal and professional growth, the BCAE met the challenges of a thriving urban community.

In 2020, the BCAE and JVS Boston merged, and plans for renovating 122 Arlington Street began. Now, the building is home to ArLab, the joint location for healthcare and biotechnology courses administered by JVS Boston and Quincy College.

CAE was home to a robust culinary program The BCAE was home to a robust culinary program, including a Celebrity Chef Series, as depicted above.
BCAE lived in the Gamble Mansion When the BCAE lived in the Gamble Mansion at 5 Commonwealth Ave., they held dance classes in the grand ballroom. Upon moving to 122 Arlington Street, a modern dance studio was created for dance classes.
122 Arlington Street 122 Arlington Street was purchased by the BCAE in the 1980s. It was formerly a parking garage and underwent two renovations under the BCAE’s ownership.
